Judo
Judo translated is the "gentle way". Judo is the grandfather of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It is a HUGE Olympic sport and should be learned by all BJJ competitors and fighters wanting to improve their grappling abilities. Many current MMA champions are former Judo Black Belts. It emphasizes technique and leverage to achieve maximum efficiency through minimum effort. 3 main ways of winning in judo include 1. Throwing an opponent down perfectly will win by Ippon (1 full point). 2. Pinning opponent on their back, and of course 3. Submissions. While joint locks, grappling (ne-waza), and sometimes striking are incorporated, the primary foucs is throwing techniques (nage-waza). Judoka (practioners) will use balance, counter-balance, and their oppenents own momentum to perform sometimes devastating throws. The goal of these throws is to disable an oppenent and cause them to land flat on their back. Throwing an oppenent during a match or combat can have the multiple effects of damaging them not only physically, but mentally as well. There are two basic sub-categories of throwing techniques: standing and sacrificial. Stading techniques include hand, hip, foot, and leg techniques. Sacrifical techniques involve both the aggressor and the defender falling to the ground. The judoka performing the throw will fall onto their own back or side in order to perform the throw.
Boxing
Often referred to as the sweet science, boxing teaches it's pupils to use their fists as weapons as they simultaneously use footwork and angles to put them in advantageous positions to defeat their opponents. No other art teaches you how to produce power in your hands quite like boxing.
